What the Government Plans to Build

Two drawings carry the whole plan. The Telangana government's 'Typical Proposed Cross Section' and its riverbed grading diagram show the Musi held inside a fixed engineering structure: a 70 m concrete bed, engineered slopes, a 200 m corridor, and the water squeezed into 108 m. Everything below is read off those drawings.

The chapters

Total channelization: the concrete jacket

The 'Typical Proposed Cross Section' traps the river inside a fixed engineering structure. The bed, the banks and the foundations are all drawn as built work.

  • Paving the flow bed. The central bed is 70 m wide, and the drawing labels that entire span for C.C M30 grade concrete and P.C.C 1:3:6. The natural riverbed of sand, rock and silt is replaced by a permanent, reinforced concrete floor.
  • The symmetrical slope. The banks are redesigned as uniform engineered inclines, lined with concrete and 'filter media'. These are not natural earthen banks. They hold the river in a perfect trapezoid.
  • Structural anchors. Toe walls, the foundation blocks shown in dark blue and yellow, anchor the concrete slopes deep into the ground. After that the river cannot meander or widen on its own.

River bed grading and deepening

The second drawing shows how the bed is prepared to take the concrete.

  • Lowering the floor. A 'proposed bed level' in red sits well below the 'existing bed level' shown as blue hatching. The natural riverbed is dredged and excavated down to that new depth.
  • Geometric uniformity. The grading removes the islands, the sediment mounds and the winding paths, and leaves a smooth, symmetrical corridor 200 m wide.
  • Centering the flow. A 'proposed centre line' fixes the water on a mathematically centred path, whatever course the river would take on its own.

The 200 m corridor is a land project

Read the widths together and the 'riverfront' is a real estate and infrastructure project with a park laid on top.

  • The shrunken river. The project zone is 200 m wide. The water channel is restricted to just 108 m. The rest is reclaimed land.
  • Road building. A 30 m wide main road runs along the reclaimed land on both banks. Fixing the river inside concrete walls turns floodplain into stable ground, ground that can carry permanent asphalt roads and commercial promenades.
  • The utility spine. Trunk sewers and utility lines are laid under the new roads and the 'linear park'. The riverfront serves as the lid on a large utility corridor.

The two-tier promenade

The first drawing also builds a 'social' space into the concrete walls, on two levels.

  • The lower promenade is a walkway just above the mean water level (MWL). It brings people down into the concrete tub.
  • The upper promenade is a second level of walkways and parks at the top of the embankment. It separates the 'recreational' zone from the new 30 m main roads.
