The Musi made Hyderabad

The Musi is older than the city on its banks. Four moments explain how we got here.

    Water for the city

    For hundreds of years the Musi gave Hyderabad drinking water, fields and washing places. Families settled on both banks because the water was there.

    1908: the Great Musi Flood

    In September 1908 the river rose and tore through the city. Thousands of people died in one night. That flood is still the city's oldest water memory.

    The answer was storage and space

    Sir M. Visvesvaraya told the city to hold water upstream and leave the river room to spread. Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar were built for that. The answer was storage and space, not speed and concrete.

    Today, and the choice we have

    Now the Musi carries the city's waste. We are not against fixing the river. We are against faking it. Clean the water, do not bury it.

How it got dirty

The Musi did not go bad on its own

Four things made the water what it is. Each one has a fix that we can name.

The city's waste goes in raw

About 1,800 million litres a day (MLD) of sewage reach the Musi without being cleaned. That is the main reason the water is black and smells.

21 plants that were never built

In 2019, CSIR-NEERI, a team of government scientists, wrote a plan for 21 new sewage treatment plants. The budget was ₹2,34,000 lakhs. Not one was built.

Borrowed water to hide the dirt

The plan now is to pump in Godavari water so the channel looks full all year. A full channel is not a clean one. This hides the dirt, it does not remove it.

How a river cleans itself

A living river cleans itself for free

A healthy river is a water treatment plant that nobody pays for. Here is how it works.

A hidden layer under the sand

Under the sand and gravel of a riverbed sits a wet layer full of tiny life. Scientists call it the hyporheic zone, which means the soaked ground under and beside the river. Water seeps through it and the tiny life eats the waste.

Rocks and ripples add oxygen

Water tumbling over rocks and an uneven bed mixes in oxygen. Oxygen feeds the bacteria that break sewage down. A smooth concrete floor takes the tumbling away.

Reeds work like kidneys

Marsh plants on the bank pull heavy metals and nitrates out of the water. Typha and Phragmites, the tall reeds you already see along the Musi, do this work every day for nothing.

Concrete sends the city a bill

A concrete box can do none of this. Then the city has to pay for pumps and electricity, year after year, to copy a job the river did on its own.

Our plan, in four steps

  1. 1 Clean the water first, at the source.
  2. 2 Protect the floodplain, the land the river needs when it rises.
  3. 3 Keep the bed alive: sand, gravel, reeds, no concrete lid.
  4. 4 Ask the people who live here, and write down what they say.
What we lose

The river is somebody's work, health and home

A concrete box does not only cost us a view. It takes work, cool nights and living things.

Work and food

The riverbed is a working place. Dhobis wash clothes there. Small farmers grow greens on the banks. A smooth channel dumps water fast past kilometre 21, so farmers downstream get sudden floods the river never made.

Heat and water at home

Nights along the river stay 3 to 5°C hotter. Families who cannot afford coolers pay in electricity bills and in heat exhaustion, and older people and children feel it first. When borewells go dry, water costs more.

Fish, turtles and birds

River animals need the messy parts of a river: mudflats, reeds and shallow pools. A smooth concrete box has none of them.
